About

01 / Who I am
Portrait of Lucas Lau Grady

I am a third-year Sustainability Sciences student at PSL University in Paris: a researcher, a musician, and an athlete.

Vancouver ↔ Paris

Cultural bridge

I grew up between Vancouver and Paris, and I've never had to choose between them. One is steeped in centuries of history, craft and savoir-faire; the other is young, open-minded and turned toward the mountains and the ocean. I live at the crossroads of the two, always looking for the best of both worlds, and it's made me curious about every culture I meet along the way.

Voice / Guitar / Production

Music & art

I sing, play guitar, and write and produce music, on my own and with bands. To me, music is a universal language. It can carry the deepest emotions and bring complete strangers together.

BSc Sustainability Sciences — PSL

Science & curiosity

Sustainability Sciences lets me dig into how the world got where it is and where it might be heading. I want to turn that understanding into real, positive impact, and leave things better than I found them.

Snow / Water / Rock / Pitch

Sport & the outdoors

West coast skiing, surfing, climbing and sailing taught me how powerful nature is, and how completely these sports depend on it. Every season on snow or water reminds me what we stand to lose, and pushes me to protect it. Football taught me the rest: teamwork, discipline, and the beauty of the game.

I don't have one fixed destination, just the goal of finding ways to bring this all together.

Music

02 / Musician

I write and produce all my music, using guitars, digital sounds, and whatever else might be sitting around. To date, I've made a grand total of $6.86!

Art Installation

03 / Artist

In 2024, I mounted my IB art exhibition Sound, and its impact on the human soul: five projects exploring how sound makes us feel, giving shape and colour to the emotions left behind.

Project 01 / 05

Fermata

Accompanied by an immersive soundscape, this sculpture of a fermata (a musical pause whose length is left to the performer) only comes together when seen from below. Finding that angle mirrors finding the mindset for calm and clarity.

Project 02 / 05

Sonar images

Playing with exposure and light to create abstract representations of sound waves travelling through an empty space.

Project 03 / 05

Mountain photos

These photos were taken during a trip to Chamonix, France, hoping to translate the powerful silence expressed by the still mountains and the inner peace felt in this serene environment.

Project 04 / 05

Vinyl Smash

By smearing acrylic paint between a spinning vinyl record and a canvas, I tried to capture the raw emotion a cherished song can hold, letting the record itself paint what it plays.

Film score

04 / Composer

Composed the full original score for the video that won the 2023 Avia CRC Robotics Competition. It was my first time composing for film, and I loved shaping the music to tell the story alongside the images.

Education

05 / Academic background

I am a bilingual student in third year of the Bachelor of Sustainability Sciences at Paris Sciences and Letters University.

University of British Columbia 2026

Engineering Research Intern

I conducted a literature review on quantifying water consumption in modern copper production. Research entailed a deep-dive into the different copper production processes, their respective water usage patterns, and potential environmental solutions.

Fieldwork Research: Coastal Zones in the Anthropocene

During a week of field research on the Brittany coast, I investigated the ecological and socio-environmental challenges facing the shoreline, from infrastructure to water management and biodiversity. I mapped the stakeholders involved in managing and preserving these areas, including the restoration of the Marais de Saint-Coulban, and analysed how water management and ecological connectivity shape coastal resilience, using the Étang de Beaufort as a case study. I also assessed how nature-based solutions can strengthen both social and environmental resilience.

Paleo-Energetics / Urban Planning in Response to Heatwaves

My team and I designed an interactive mini-game that takes players on a walk through the streets of Paris, tracing how the city has managed its water and planned its growth over the centuries. To ground it in today's reality, we interviewed residents of the 13th arrondissement about how they live with heat, and researched how cities can adapt their infrastructure and planning to increasingly severe heatwaves.

Teaching + facilitating

Climate Fresk Since 2025

Climate Fresk facilitator

I facilitate Climate Fresk workshops, where a group pieces together the causes and effects of climate change using cards based on IPCC science. My role is to guide the discussion, not lecture, so people reach the conclusions themselves.

MacSailing Jericho Beach, Vancouver

Sailing instructor

I teach children sailing, canoeing and the basics of marine ecology, and I teach adults to sail. I plan and run the lessons myself, on the water. The job is as much about people as boats: keeping a group safe, reading the conditions, and making sure everyone goes home wanting to come back.
